  Peak Shipping Season

The holiday season always heavily impacts all shipping carriers, but this year they are anticipating unprecedented volume. Parcel carriers have already been strained beginning in mid-March when many Shelter-In-Place orders took effect due to COVID-19. Heading into holiday season, carriers are anticipating a high volume of in-person shopping converting to online shopping which will further impact their service. Additionally, continued unpredictable winter weather may impact parcel carriers at any time in any part of the country. Due to these factors, they anticipate volume surge will begin to rise starting November 2 vs the historical launch on Black Friday.

In preparation of this surge in volume, shipping carriers have hired an additional 100,000 seasonal workers, enhanced facilities to handle larger shipments, and are using state-of-the-art technology to improve efficiency and reliable deliveries. In additional, they have changed some standards of service for the holiday season:

  • Beginning September 28th, Standard Overnight shipping moved to a service commitment of arriving by 4:30 PM the next day.
  • Beginning November 2nd, some Ground packages may require additional delivery time. This change will be effective through January 3, 2021. Please refer to the map below for impacted areas.

Best Practices for Ordering O&P during the Peak Holiday Season

  Patient Planning:
Impacted locations should understand changes to service time-in-transit windows when scheduling patient visits and make necessary adjustments.

  Upgrade Your Shipping Method:
Upgrading shipping method to expedite shipments should be considered to meet scheduling deadlines for sensitive deliveries.

   Hold at Locations:
Check to see where your nearest Hold at Location is for your carrier and use this service to pick-up packages outside of normal clinic hours.

   Priority Overnight Express Alert:
A new overnight service alert is being implemented to help ensure proactive tracking of urgent deliveries. More information coming soon.
